Parks and Open Spaces

Having a place to exercise and be physically active is important to your health.

The Franklin Park forms at the southernmost section of Roxbury and there are numerous other parks, open spaces, and playgrounds  surrounding the area.

Safety

Whether your community, including its parks and open spaces, is safe can affect how much you exercise.

Within the 12 Wellness Trail Neighborhoods, Roxbury has the highest rate of non-fatal assault-related gunshot and stabbing victims.

Closeness to Highways

Your proximity to highways affects your risk for asthma and cardiovascular disease.

“Busy” roadways have over 18,000 cars on an average week day. Roxbury is not close to any major highways although it does have a highly trafficked area along Columbus Avenue (39,000 cars per average week day), Tremont Street (33,000 cars per average week day), Melnea Cass Blvd. (32,000 cars per average week day), and Seaver Street (30,000 cars per average week day).

Healthy Food

Eating healthy reduces your risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease, but it can depend on your ability to find healthy food stores in your neighborhood.

Of the 12 Wellness Trail Neighborhoods, Roxbury has the greatest number of places for healthy food with its grocery stores, Farmers Markets and 45 community gardens, the largest number of community gardens in any Boston neighborhood.
